38th District Court
The Court is served by one elected judge and one appointed magistrate. District Judges are elected on non-partisan ballots for terms of six years.
The Magistrate's duties include conducting arraignments, setting bail, conducting informal traffic hearings, search warrants and performing marriages. The Magistrate of the 38th District Court is the Honorable Karen Haydett.

Judge Carl Gerds III was elected district judge in November 2008 and began his first six-year term on January 1, 2009. He was re-elected for a second term November 6, 2014. Prior to his election to the bench, he worked in private practice for 30 years and has resided in the City of Eastpointe all his life. He handled a variety of cases while in private practice and feels this has assisted him when handling traffic matters, criminal matters and civil suits.
Judge Gerds III is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, American Bar Association and Michigan District Judges Association. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Detroit and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School.
Judge Gerds III has been married to Roslyn for 40 years and they have three children, Jenna, Bethany and Caitlyn. He is a proud grandfather to Lilly, Daisy and Violet . Judge Gerds has a long record of civic community involvement: past Eastpointe Mayor Pro Tem, twice elected to Eastpointe City Council, former member of 8 Mile-Kelly Homeowners Association, current member and past president of Eastpointe Chamber of Commerce and former member Eastpointe Senior Citizen Advisory Commission.
